For this slim volume of poetry, Beth Richards has drawn
inspiration from her own experiences to produce a thoughtful collection of
verse. Although the topics vary, the overriding message is be positive
and don’t overlook, or take for granted, the many wondrous gifts in your
life as you struggle over the obstacles that fate places in your path.
PRESS RELEASE:
Wednesday June 25th
2005
A local author
has recently published a book of her reflections on life. Entitled Reflections
in Verse, the book includes poems on many subjects related to events
in her own life, or things which have happened to people close to her.
Beth Winchcombe, who writes under her pen-name of Beth Richards, has been
writing poetry for 30 years. She was born in Marlow in Buckinghamshire but
moved to Derbyshire 7 years ago, and now lives in Clowne.
Beth says, “Inspirations come to me at any time. I believe that
everything we do in life begins with just an idea, and whether we then
follow up that idea is entirely up to us.” Beth believes that this can
apply to big ambitions and to simple pastimes and that, if people feel
they have a gift, they should use it. Her poems reflect this simple
belief.
The publisher’s notes accompanying Beth’s book describe her work:
“For this slim volume of
poetry, Beth Richards has drawn inspiration from her own experiences to
produce a thoughtful collection of verse. Although the topics vary, the
overriding message is to be positive and don’t overlook, or take for
granted, the many wondrous gifts in your life as you struggle over the
obstacles that fate places in your path.”
Her poem, entitled “Reflections”, demonstrates that
positive view:
I
look in the mirror and what do I see?
A face
looking back, surely it’s
not me?
What happened to the young girl,
The one with long blonde hair?
Certainly now she is no longer there.
The
years have gone past
And my hair is now grey,
But inside it’s still
me
And always will be, come what may.
In other verses she writes of friendship, dreams, love and
destiny.
Beth describes the readers of her book
as being people much like herself. “We have all had and lost friends,
done things of which we are proud and others which we have regretted.
People of my age like to reflect on those thoughts and many people who
have read my poems describe the way in which the verses seem to have been
speaking about something very personal to them.”
Reflections in Verse is published by Arthur H Stockwell. The book is available,
price £3-99 (plus 99p postage), direct from the Author. For further information on this

About the author
Poetry
is one of Beth Richard’s creative gifts. She also paints in oils. She
believes that if one has a gift one should use it. She has written many
poems on many subjects, usually related to happenings in her life and
people close to her. She says: “I think very deeply and therefore what I
write and what I paint comes right from my heart.” Inspirations come to
her at any time. “Everything we do in life begins with just an idea,”
she says, and adds, “whether we pursue it is up to us." Her second
book,
Chill Out With Beth,
embraces her sensitive and optimistic vision for both young and old so
that, in a sense, the reader has the benefit of two books in one! Parents
and Grandparents can read the beguiling story in the first part to their
children or grandchildren, and enjoy the poems that follow for themselves.
The second volume is in effect an extension of the poet’s earlier collection
Reflections in Verse.
Beth Richards has been writing poetry for thirty years. She was born
in Marlow in Buckinghamshire, but moved to Derbyshire seven years ago, and
now lives in Clowne.
PROFILES
OF THE AUTHOR
Profile (No.1)
I began writing poetry 30 years ago, so my small book entitled REFLECTIONS IN VERSE includes poems on many subjects usually related to
happenings in my lifetime and people close to me.
Inspirations come to me at anytime. I believe that everything we do in life
begins with just an idea; whether we pursue it is up to us. I will pick just one or two poems from my book.
We all have a dream at some time in our lives. So "Dream Cottage"
on pages 12 & 13 were my dream.
Also, many of us have a best friend. So “My Best Friend" is on page 22.
Many of us at some time in our lives have a dog. So "Pickles" on page 25 was my dog.
We can all relate I’m sure to "SECOND CHANCE" at some time in our lives. My meaning to this poem
is: “We are none of us perfect.”
I would be happy for you to read and enjoy my small book, or perhaps you know someone who would like it as a small gift. If so please contact me
Beth Richards.

Profile (No.2)
I was born in Marlow, Bucks and have now retired to CLOWNE in
Derbyshire.
I began writing poetry over 30 years ago and recently had a small book
published entitled “REFLECTIONS IN VERSE". For this I use my pseudonym
Beth Richards.
The poems are on various subjects as they related to happenings
throughout my life and those close to me.
I believe if you have a gift you should use it.
I also paint in oils and enjoy both hobbies.
Everything we do in life begins as an idea and depends on whether we pursue it.
To read my small book and I hope enjoy it as my many friends have, or to obtain a copy, perhaps for a small gift for someone, is possible by contacting myself.

Profile (No.3)
For what it is worth
my belief is that our lives are mapped out from the day we are born.
Therefore
my poem entitled “DESTINY” “ on page 43 in REFLECTIONS IN
VERSE
is my way of saying just this.
In
my second book CHILL OUT WITH BETH! GEMS FOR YOUNG AND OLD there is
a poem entitled “JUST A MEMORY” which is a slightly philosophical view
of mine; it is on page 14.
This
year after watching the Remembrance Services on T.V., I just knew I had to
write a poem for this was all a part of History, so I’ve written a long
poem entitled “REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY”. It came to me in what I call an
inspiration, but it is really like listening to a phone call into my mind.
If
my books help someone to deal with something in their life, then to me it
will all have been worthwhile and give me a feeling of great achievement.

Remembrance Sunday
Remembrance day, another year gone by,
A time to think and remember them, they didn’t want
to die,
They had to fight for King and Country, they didn’t
have a choice,
They had to leave their loved ones, their thoughts
they couldn’t voice,
Sixty years on, we the people remember the pain that
war can cause,
But has anyone learnt from the horrors of the past,
not to start these wars?
It seems not—they carry on making the same mistakes
again.
Why don’t they
listen, learn from the past? It’s really very plain,
For there is much anger and un-rest throughout the
world today,
Uprisings, trouble, hatred and violence; there must be
another way.
Each year we go on remembering the brave who fought
and died,
The wives and mothers left at home, their hopes and
fears they would hide.
Some came home wounded, disabled, troubled in their
mind,
Some came home disfigured, some of them were blind.
No doubt next year they’ll gather once again,
Two minutes of silence to reflect and think of all the
needless pain.
We can’t put right the wrongs of the past but surely
can’t they see,
Just think about the consequences of any actions,
think of the dying soldier’s last words,
What would they be? …
PLEASE REMEMBER ME…

Chill Out With Beth combines an enchanting fairy
story for children with poems that are gems of wisdom and insight relevant
to both young and old in the journey of life. Writing of friendship,
dreams, love and destiny, her overall message in is to be positive and to
appreciate the wondrous gifts in our lives.
In this intriguing collection of sincere and heartfelt poems, Beth Richards, the “Wise Owl”, brings us more gems of wisdom that become beacons for guidance through the everyday problems and joys of life. Writing of friendship, dreams, love and destiny, her overall message in is to be positive and to appreciate the wondrous gifts in our lives.
This story is based on what a lot of us feel when our
children flee the nest! Life is a journey. At the beginning Carol has a
dream, which is something many of us have and fulfil, depending upon
circumstances. The big question is—will we achieve, in the end, what
starts out as a dream?
