As our dreams are full of images that entrance us, so Beth Richards' poems are full of images, visual pictures and metaphors, that keep us spellbound and enchant us. Through the images perceived by the poet we are drawn into her world and see through her eyes; for example, through the central image of a mirror in which the ageing poet observes her own image in 'A Lifetime', the reader feels himself or herself in the place of the observer, sharing her feelings and sensations. The poems in this new collection are bound together by the theme of love, and are full of the wisdom of life; it is the wisdom of a poet once described as 'the wise owl', who has experienced a range of feelings and difficulties that increase with the ageing process - for with age comes wisdom! - Charles Muller, Diadem Books

Life

Beth Richards has long enjoyed the reputation, in her writings, as a ‘wise owl’. She has the perspicacity of seeing ‘deep down things’, right into the heart of things and has the ability to speak for many of us who are growing older, approaching retirement, and combining the wisdom of our years with the frustrations of age, when we become disillusioned with money spent on material gain instead of alleviating poverty, and become fed up with tailgaters driving too close to us! She is not afraid to speak out and provide a voice for us golden oldies who often suffer the indignity of being invisible to the younger generation who live at a different pace. Most touching is Beth’s evocation, on behalf of many of us, of memories and longings from days gone by - the longings for lost intimacies, of treasured moments no longer there, of being held and comforted; yet through her prose and poems we can share the reevocation of such moments, even ‘Reliving that tingling sensation before the explosion’! Beth has the soul of a poet and she is not afraid to bare her soul, however sensitive, and it’s this sincere and honest quality that will make the reader feel like a close friend.

Bittersweet - Juanita Nena RudonBeeke

Juanita Nena RudonBeeke’s poems go straight to the heart and are reflections on a wide range of human relationships. She writes with love and sympathy, but never with blinkers on, for she does not conceal the injustices, the cruelties, and the betrayals, so often manifested in the modern world and as often demonstrated in her beloved country of Belize. I love the gentle wisdom, the acceptance of the ineluctable mutability of life, in ‘Those To Heaven Sing’. All of the poems have this sense of mature acceptance. The gentle probing about the mystery of life in ‘Time Without End’ leaves one with a sense of wonder. I do like these poems for they leave no dregs of anger or frustration at the bottom of the cup, as it were, when you have read them. If anything, they leave a sweetness, albeit sometimes a bitter sweetness, when you have closed the book. Also, you can read them again, coming back to them like a refreshing stream.' – Charles Muller, Diadem Books.

Formal learning or not, if inspiration can be found elsewhere, especially in a book, then excerpts can be taken from many a well-kept diary, and poems written in the middle of the night, even when woken meant that a whole new idea might be conveyed and written; or the thought of an epic statement might have had the ability for changing someone's life for ever. I always believed that it was worth the trouble to put pen to paper. Read this, and you may find yourself all wrapped up in a statement meant only for you. Or it could be our Father God calling in the night with His angels ready to save you in the twinkling of an eye. God bless you all and I really love you, whoever you are. Nothing in this book was just meant for me, otherwise it is very likely I would have carried on sleeping-

About the author

My whole concept with Turn the Page is for it to be different this time-not a collection of poems but a collection of short stories. As I've already mentioned in my Preface, I love writing short stories and pray that you'll love reading them. Sometimes one has to venture out of one's comfort zone, into a new sphere. The Proverb 'Nothing ventured, nothing gained' is all too true! I pray that you'll enjoy delving into my new venture as you read these stories. In Proverbs 16:31 we are told, 'The grey head is a crown of glory, if it is seen in the way of righteousness!' I have acquired that status. My photo portrays this. Bring on the righteousness in the form of more writing! There has to be some advantages to ageing, after all.

Pause for Thought: With Versastyle Poetry

The most significant contribution of this versatile and inspired author in this volume is her use of a new form of poetry that she has aptly dubbed 'Versastyle Poetry' - for which she deserves to find a permanent place in the history of literary criticism or literary style. This is the intermingling of, or alternating use of, free verse and rhyming stanzas... where the repeated rhyming stanza picks up the thematic strands in the free verse component as an echo, refrain or leitmotif, serving, in effect, as a thematic chorus. This works very effectively, for example, in her poems 'Delicate Rosebuds', and 'Magic Mirror', where each repetition of the rhyming stanza uncovers deeper levels of insight.

Step into my World
by Dave Navsa

UK price: £7.99 US price: $10.99
Format: Paperback
Pages: 268
ISBN: 978-1908026156
Published: April 2011

Come through the Gate with the Poet and step into his world! This Collection of Poems is a sequel to Climb Aboard My Bus: Pictures in Verse published in 2007. Step into My World will take you on a guided tour of his imaginative and contrasting mind expressed colourfully and powerfully. The Poems can be delightfully light-hearted, sparkling with humour, but there are those that resonate on a deeper level. They venture into the darker side of the human psyche, the world of inner turmoil and a world of conflict. Sometimes the Poems are almost eerily prophetic, as with "An Earthquake Happened", written long before the devastation of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Dave Navsa was inspired by his life experiences and the people and events surrounding them. As a talented wordsmith he was able to encapsulate these emotions and thoughts into this Collection, with a local flavour as depicted by the lead Poem, "Rochester High Street", and the snapshot of "Rochester Cathedral" on the facing page

My main aim in Epic Times, Past and Present is to magnify the difference between life in the 20th Century and today's faster pace of living. To do this I began with 'Comradeship at its Best', a true story of my childhood memories of war-torn Britain back in the 4th decade of the last century. The theme of the very last poem, 'The Day I Trembled with Fear' occurred recently in January 2011, reflecting upon a mini-earthquake in Ripon, also Leeds...just a few miles from where I live in Derbyshire. I remarked in this poem, 'we don't do Earthquakes in Britain', but it appears now....anything goes! The book literally goes from past to present times. Are we any better off with today's way of living? I don't think so! Do you? Read this book before you answer!

John Waddell comments on the events of daily life with a dry humour. He loves his garden and is passionate about his native Scotland, but deplores the blight of modern town planning and the litter in the streets. His comments on human nature - not excluding his own foibles - show a wryly comic insight.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT is a well known phrase, often used - and this time Beth Richards hopes her latest title will give some readers just that - Food for Thought! In our present generation of the 21st Century folk are living their lives as though on a treadmill. They may be going faster and faster - but, like a treadmill, they are going nowhere fast. Time and money seem to be of the essence in everything. Primary Care Trusts are only interested in their target figures!

Beth Richards has written many of the poems in Food for Thought relating to everyday life - life in this hectic 21st Century. She hopes that in this book many readers may be helped to live life to the full - to live in the present and not wish the precious gift of life away. The last poem `Final Curtain Call' comes to us all one day. We should make sure it's later rather than sooner!

Her Name is Hope - Life Force

Perfect binding , cream interior

Pages: 258
ISBN: 978-1-4092-3279-7
Published: October-2008

This is Nick Armbrister’s third collection of poems and his fourth book. It has poems that didn’t make his first two collections due to a variety of reasons. He didn’t think some of his early poems were up to standard; these he edited and rewrote; some poetry was too personal in nature, like relationship ones. Also, poetry that repeated the same subject matter never made the first two books. In later years, after re-reading his poetry, Nick decided to bring all of his remaining unpublished work together in this new volume – poems written during the years 1996-2008. The work changes in depth, quality and subject matter and most of the poems have never been published before. Nick continues his passionate, multi-emotional and often left-of-centre work in these poems. Nick has always been drawn to the weird and wonderful. While his poems are often simple and brittle, they make a graphic and powerful impact that cuts like broken glass.

The Half-Closed Eye. Poems by Maria Katrakis

                           Johannesburg: Justified Press, 1994.  52 pp.       £9.50

(STOP PRESS: this anthology is currently out of print. A new anthology is being compiled. Notification will be given here as soon as new stocks are received!)

Although concerned with time and memory, many of the poems in this anthology focus on people. Maria Katrakis sketches their joys and their sorrows in splinter-sharp, lyrical poems which universalise the human situation. She is not a detached observer but a centre of consciousness, fully a part of the suffering or happiness she depicts. If unrequited hope is the main theme linking her poems together, it is because the 'half-closed eye' does not evade the realities of modern life.

Maria Katrakis has written numerous educational articles and various study guides. She is the author of radio plays and has been a finalist in both the Amstel Playwright of the Year and Young Africa Award literary competitions. She is the first woman to win the Ernst van Heerden Creative Writing Award from the University if the Witwatersrand, for a poetry anthology.

Maria Katrakis is a founder member of the Hellenic Ladies Association and of the Students Hellenic Association.

Here is a sample poem from this excellent anthology:

before we met

our lives trailed

behind us like

the silvered threads

of climbing

spiders

now our shared

years are woven

into a tenuous

web of happiness

where

spiderwise

we wait to trap

our fate

Like life mouldering in a plumstone.

                                But she was alive there,

                                Transparent on the window-pane,

Insatiate with her own green light.

At the angles of her head

The bald green eyes looked inward,

                                Outward, watching the juices

Of divination run through her long flanks,

                                Her two razors of supplication

                                Hone themselves on prayer.

                                How her angled-backward legs,

Thin as fuses, kept her steady on the glass

I do not know. It was clear

Her meagre wings held no notion of flying.

And her triangular head, though tilted, was still.

                               But her body was swaying.

                               It must have taken skill

To reach the fused wire of her mate's claw

Twitching out its voltage in her mouth.

She seemed to have no sense of loss,

Regret. No salivation; an appetite merely.

Something to satisfy. I moved my eyes.

The sad attenuations of the willows

Leaked palely under the electric lamps.

The dark was chilled below their griefs.

Her breath is a green frost; famine her mandibles.

And time is browsing, mantis-jawed, on the delicate

Distal of my foot.  I am digestible.
