Beth Richards writes: ‘I’ve
always maintained that
writing poetry (and other
forms of creative writing)
is a gift from God.’ Here,
again, the creative muse
continues to inspire
Beth—hence this latest book
of short stories and poetry
entitled Light Reading.
(Discerning readers will, of
course, appreciate the pun
on the word Light,
hopefully made clearer by
Beth’s oil painting of the
Baccaro Lighthouse, in Nova
Scotia, on the front cover!)
About the author

Beth really enjoys writing
‘free verse’, and so there
are quite a number of these
in this latest book of
hers. It appears to come
frequently and naturally to
her. This way she is able
to delve into her
subconscious so that the
poems—and the stories that
follow, too—become
reflections of some of her
innermost thoughts. In the
short stories she also has
the remarkable gift of being
able to project herself
into, and identify with, a
character from a completely
different walk of life and
sphere of experience—the
mark of a true creative
genius
Beth Richards has been
writing poetry for 40 years.
She was born in Marlow in
Buckinghamshire, but moved
to Derbyshire ten ago, and
now lives in Clowne.

The most significant
contribution of this
versatile and inspired
author in this volume is her
use of a new form of poetry
that she has aptly dubbed 'Versastyle
Poetry' - for which she
deserves to find a permanent
place in the history of
literary criticism or
literary style. This is the
intermingling of, or
alternating use of, free
verse and rhyming stanzas...
where the repeated rhyming
stanza picks up the thematic
strands in the free verse
component as an echo,
refrain or leitmotif,
serving, in effect, as a
thematic chorus. This works
very effectively, for
example, in her poems
'Delicate Rosebuds', and
'Magic Mirror', where each
repetition of the rhyming
stanza uncovers deeper
levels of insight.

My main aim in Epic Times,
Past and Present is to
magnify the difference
between life in the 20th
Century and today's faster
pace of living. To do this I
began with 'Comradeship at
its Best', a true story of
my childhood memories of
war-torn Britain back in the
4th decade of the last
century. The theme of the
very last poem, 'The Day I
Trembled with Fear' occurred
recently in January 2011,
reflecting upon a
mini-earthquake in Ripon,
also Leeds...just a few
miles from where I live in
Derbyshire. I remarked in
this poem, 'we don't do
Earthquakes in Britain', but
it appears now....anything
goes! The book literally
goes from past to present
times. Are we any better off
with today's way of living?
I don't think so! Do you?
Read this book before you
answer! - Beth Richards.

Two poets - two worlds:
poems of deep and humorous
reflections (set in England)
contrasted with poems of
stark reality (set in South
Africa and elsewhere).
This story is based on what
a lot of us feel when our
children flee the nest! Life
is a journey. At the
beginning Carol has a dream,
which is something many of
us have and fulfil,
depending upon
circumstances. The big
question is—will we achieve,
in the end, what starts out
as a dream?
For this slim
volume of poetry, Beth
Richards has drawn
inspiration from her own
experiences to produce a
thoughtful collection of
verse. Although the topics
vary, the overriding
message is be positive and
don’t overlook, or take for
granted, the many wondrous
gifts in your life as you
struggle over the obstacles
that fate places in your
path.
In this intriguing
collection of sincere and
heartfelt poems, Beth
Richards, the “Wise Owl”,
brings us more gems of
wisdom that become beacons
for guidance through the
everyday problems and joys
of life. Writing of
friendship, dreams, love and
destiny, her overall message
in is to be positive and to
appreciate the wondrous
gifts in our lives.

A new collection of Beth
Richards' inspiring poems
and prose pieces.
NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR:
My aim in this book of poems
and prose is to reach out to
a number of readers –
therefore I’ve written about
many different subjects,
which will almost certainly
touch the hearts of many.
Maybe some of the subjects
will even help someone with
a similar problem in his or
her life to find a solution
– a form of self-help!
