The novel is extremely well
written, imaginative, and
full of great ideas and
concepts, which at its best
reminds and bears similar
styles to the works of Niven
and Pournelle. It examines
how alien races may differ
in their culture and
beliefs, and brings the
reader a wonderful tale of
how these races interact
with the human survivors of
Earth.
Rescue One - Sketch by the
Author
Book
Description
Over six million years in
the future, after the sun
has become a red giant,
mankind has another chance
to establish its
civilisation on a
terra-formed Jupiter, with
the Genesis project. The
expanding sun has stripped
away the great mantle of gas
leaving a liveable world.
There is a problem however.
The Gnathe also live there
and when humanity decides to
interfere in their affairs,
a chain of events is set in
motion that will forever
change both societies.
Using science fact as well
as fiction to tell a
remarkable story set in the
far future, the author’s use
and knowledge and research
of scientific details gives
the novel an air of realism
that enhances the story,
making it believable and
easy to imagine being a
possible future, to show an
eventual fate of the human
race, and of our solar
system.
About the author
Barry
Woodham was born in 1943 and
has lived in
Swindon all his life. He spent his working life as a
design engineer/draughtsman
and worked on the nuclear
fusion project for thirteen
years. Finding himself with
nothing to read one
lunchtime he began to write
the saga of the Gnathe and
after many of his colleagues
began to read as quickly as
he could finish the
chapters, he continued on
and finished the book.
Having been able to take
early retirement, he now has
more time to devote to
writing than in the past,
also spending time fishing
and walking his dogs.
From the Evening
Advertiser, Thursday, December 2, 2004 :
Writer says he’s over the
moon
Final frontier for sci-fi
fan
By
David Andrew
A science fiction fanatic
from Swindon
has had his first novel
published.
Barry Woodham, 61, who
was a design engineer on the
nuclear fusion project, has
loved sci-fi since he was a
child.
Now his self-financed
book, ‘Genesis 2’, has been
published and he is already
working on the sequel.
He has been given
assurance that the book will
be taken by libraries and
shops in Swindon
.
The novel is set six
million years into the
future, when mankind tries
to establish itself on
Jupiter.
Barry, of Old Town,
said: “I’m absolutely over
the moon about it being
published. Everybody that
has read it so far has found
it addictive and couldn’t
put it down.”
Barry, who is married
with three sons, has paid a
publisher to edit and
produce the first five
copies of the book.
He said: “I tried
normal publishers but unless
you have a name, nobody is
interested. So in the end I
thought that if I could just
get it into print, then at
least I would have something
to show people.
“But it’s one thing getting
it published and quite
another getting it
marketed.”
He is hoping a bigger print
run will follow depending on
the initial response.
He said: “I’ve been reading
sci-fi since I was about
twelve years old. I have
read Analogue magazine,
which used to be called
Astounding Science Fiction,
for about 40 years. I’ve got
a scientific background and
I know what is good sci-fi
and what isn’t.
“I used to be a designer
draughtsman working on the
nuclear fusion project at
the Culham laboratories in
Oxfordshire.”
Joint European Torus is the
world’s largest nuclear
fusion research facility. It
is a collaboration between
all European fusion
organisations. One day in a
quiet moment at work Barry
started to write. He said:
“A number of my colleagues
used to gather round the
drawing board, and later my
computer, to see when the
next chapter was going to be
written.”
He took early retirement at
the age of 54 and has been
writing ever since.
He is delighted with the
response so far from
readers. He said: “The
publisher said that he never
produced a book that is as
good as mine.”
