A new collection of Beth Richards' inspiring poems and prose pieces.

My aim in this book of poems and prose is to reach out to a number of readers – therefore I’ve written about many different subjects, which will almost certainly touch the hearts of many.  Maybe some of the subjects will even help someone with a similar problem in his or her life to find a solution – a form of self-help!

The first section of poems deals with Faith, without which we have nothing in life apart from a very dark hole, a bottomless pit – nothing! Poems of the second group concern Love – an ingredient the world needs today, more than anything. If love can build bridges, then get building! The third, general section has poems about everyday happenings, events or challenges we all live with or have to face at some time in our lives.

Finally. I have included six short stories in which I have portrayed myself as the protagonist – using my imagination wherever it was needed, for whomever I’m portraying! In doing this I have explored the hopes, fears and excitement of these characters.

My inspiration for writing poetry began way back in the last century – some forty years ago now. But I only began to be serious about it since retiring to Derbyshire.

I was born in Marlow, Bucks – but my late Father was a Derbyshire man – so to retire to Derbyshire was almost like coming home for me. I believe that I’ve been blessed with a wonderful gift. A Gift from God no less, which I intend to use. I write quite a lot of ‘free verse’ nowadays, and find myself delving into my innermost thoughts.

I hope that anyone who reads this book will enjoy it, as much as
I've enjoyed writing it—Beth Richards.

About the author

The author in her study in Clowne, Derbyshire

Poetry is one of Beth Richard’s creative gifts. She also paints in oils. She believes that if one has a gift one should use it. She has written many poems on many subjects, usually related to happenings in her life and people close to her. She says: “I think very deeply and therefore what I write and what I paint comes right from my heart.” Inspirations come to her at any time. “Everything we do in life begins with just an idea,” she says, and adds, “whether we pursue it is up to us.”

Beth Richards has been writing poetry for thirty years. She was born in Marlow in Buckinghamshire, but moved to Derbyshire eleven years ago, and now lives in Clowne.

In a sense the novel is about two worlds that are worlds apart, and which are bridged together. Not only is there a bridge between different geographical regions, but between people of different age groups and experiences. At the end of the day it's love that is the main bridge that brings these different worlds and people together. And as the author also says, 'There is more than one type of love, though not always of the sexual nature!' It's very appropriate that the cover of this novel depicts bridges! There are twists and turns in the plot that take the story into some surprising routes - the main one being from Marlow in Buckinghamshire to Derbyshire in the north. In fact, you might say that in many ways the novel is a dramatized travelogue, and one that especially highlights the scenic and rural appeal of the Peak District.

Beth Richards has long enjoyed the reputation, in her writings, as a ‘wise owl’. She has the perspicacity of seeing ‘deep down things’, right into the heart of things and has the ability to speak for many of us who are growing older, approaching retirement, and combining the wisdom of our years with the frustrations of age, when we become disillusioned with money spent on material gain instead of alleviating poverty, and become fed up with tailgaters driving too close to us! She is not afraid to speak out and provide a voice for us golden oldies who often suffer the indignity of being invisible to the younger generation who live at a different pace. Most touching is Beth’s evocation, on behalf of many of us, of memories and longings from days gone by - the longings for lost intimacies, of treasured moments no longer there, of being held and comforted; yet through her prose and poems we can share the reevocation of such moments, even ‘Reliving that tingling sensation before the explosion’! Beth has the soul of a poet and she is not afraid to bare her soul, however sensitive, and it’s this sincere and honest quality that will make the reader feel like a close friend.

About the author

My whole concept with Turn the Page is for it to be different this time-not a collection of poems but a collection of short stories. As I've already mentioned in my Preface, I love writing short stories and pray that you'll love reading them. Sometimes one has to venture out of one's comfort zone, into a new sphere. The Proverb 'Nothing ventured, nothing gained' is all too true! I pray that you'll enjoy delving into my new venture as you read these stories. In Proverbs 16:31 we are told, 'The grey head is a crown of glory, if it is seen in the way of righteousness!' I have acquired that status. My photo portrays this. Bring on the righteousness in the form of more writing! There has to be some advantages to ageing, after all.

Pause for Thought: With Versastyle Poetry

The most significant contribution of this versatile and inspired author in this volume is her use of a new form of poetry that she has aptly dubbed 'Versastyle Poetry' - for which she deserves to find a permanent place in the history of literary criticism or literary style. This is the intermingling of, or alternating use of, free verse and rhyming stanzas... where the repeated rhyming stanza picks up the thematic strands in the free verse component as an echo, refrain or leitmotif, serving, in effect, as a thematic chorus. This works very effectively, for example, in her poems 'Delicate Rosebuds', and 'Magic Mirror', where each repetition of the rhyming stanza uncovers deeper levels of insight.

Epic Times, Past and Present: Reflections in Prose and Poetry

My main aim in Epic Times, Past and Present is to magnify the difference between life in the 20th Century and today's faster pace of living. To do this I began with 'Comradeship at its Best', a true story of my childhood memories of war-torn Britain back in the 4th decade of the last century. The theme of the very last poem, 'The Day I Trembled with Fear' occurred recently in January 2011, reflecting upon a mini-earthquake in Ripon, also Leeds...just a few miles from where I live in Derbyshire. I remarked in this poem, 'we don't do Earthquakes in Britain', but it appears now....anything goes! The book literally goes from past to present times. Are we any better off with today's way of living? I don't think so! Do you? Read this book before you answer! - Beth Richards.

Beth Richards writes: ‘I’ve always maintained that writing poetry (and other forms of creative writing) is a gift from God.’ Here, again, the creative muse continues to inspire Beth—hence this latest book of short stories and poetry entitled Light Reading.  (Discerning readers will, of course, appreciate the pun on the word Light, hopefully made clearer by Beth’s oil painting of the Baccaro Lighthouse, in Nova Scotia, on the front cover!)

Profile (No.1)

I began writing poetry 30 years ago, so my small book entitled REFLECTIONS IN VERSE includes poems on many subjects usually related to happenings in my lifetime and people close to me.

Inspirations come to me at anytime. I believe that everything we do in life begins with just an idea; whether we pursue it is up to us. I will pick just one or two poems from my book. We all have a dream at some time in our lives. So "Dream Cottage" on pages 12 & 13 were my dream.

Also, many of us have a best friend. So “My Best Friend" is on page 22.
Many of us at some time in our lives have a dog. So "Pickles" on page 25 was my dog.

We can all relate I’m sure to "SECOND CHANCE" at some time in our lives. My meaning to this poem is: “We are none of us perfect.”

I would be happy for you to read and enjoy my small book, or perhaps you know someone who would like it as a small gift. If so please contact me

Profile (No.2)

I was born in Marlow, Bucks and have now retired to CLOWNE in
I began writing poetry over 30 years ago and recently had a small book
published entitled “REFLECTIONS IN VERSE".  For this I use my pseudonym
Beth Richards.

The poems are on various subjects as they related to happenings
throughout my life and those close to me.

I believe if you have a gift you should use it.

I also paint in oils and enjoy both hobbies.

Everything we do in life begins as an idea and depends on whether we pursue it.

To read my small book and I hope enjoy it as my many friends have, or to obtain a copy, perhaps for a small gift for someone, is possible by contacting myself.

Beth Richards. Tel 01246-811558.

Profile (No.3)

For what it is worth my belief is that our lives are mapped out from the day we are born.

Therefore my poem entitled “DESTINY” “ on page 43 in REFLECTIONS IN

VERSE is my way of saying just this.

In my second book CHILL OUT WITH BETH! GEMS FOR YOUNG AND OLD there is a poem entitled “JUST A MEMORY” which is a slightly philosophical view of mine; it is on page 14.

This year after watching the Remembrance Services on T.V., I just knew I had to write a poem for this was all a part of History, so I’ve written a long poem entitled “REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY”. It came to me in what I call an inspiration, but it is really like listening to a phone call into my mind.

If my books help someone to deal with something in their life, then to me it will all have been worthwhile and give me a feeling of great achievement.
